In the early days of the NES console, game creators were often credited during the staff rolls of their games by brief pseudonyms. In his work at Natsume, Iwatsuki appeared in the end credits of several titles as "DON" and "Iwadon." In an interview with Gamasutra, the composer said the nickname "Iwadon" was mildly self-deprecatory, a schoolyard nickname that meant he was too big to be good at sports. Even today, Iwatsuki can be found on social networks including last.fm, twitter, tumblr and youtube under the handle "Iwadon."
The IWADON tribute compilation seeks to transform the meaning of the nickname Iwadon from a mild put-down to a validation of the composer's accomplishments. Having dedicated himself to efforts over the years in creating music for others to enjoy, his handle has become a reflection of passionate devotion to creativity and artistic expression. The album represents the first unified attempt by international artists to recognize Iwatsuki's achievements, building on successful efforts by 8 Bit Instrumental and SuperSweep in arranging the artist's game compositions.
Sapporo-based musician Nasuken has contributed to IWADON in a self-effacing fashion reminiscent of the early stages of Iwatsuki's career. Known by his user name Nasuken0529 on YouTube, the artist has attracted attention among game enthusiasts for his guitar covers of such popular tunes as "Armored Armadillo" from Mega Man X, "Dancing Mad" from Final Fantasy VI, "Flash in the Dark" from Mega Man 9 and "Bonus Stage" from Donkey Kong Country 2.
Natsuken performs in front of a video camera, both offering a display his guitar skills and demonstrating to others online how to go about playing the songs themselves. For the Iwatsuki compilation, Nasuken has chosen "三つ目がとおる2-2" (the jungle cave stage from Mitsume ga Tooru). Having experienced the game years ago when it was a new release for the 8-bit famicom, the musician endows the piece with an innovative rock style marked by original improvisatory passages, a synthesis of tradition and novelty.
