about

Among the intentions of the IWADON tribute album is to invite artists to expand upon the musical ideas found in Iwatsuki's soundtracks. A game composer and sound designer with twenty years experience, UK musician Matt Simmonds (often publishing music under the handle 4mat) illustrates this concept by highlighting some of the hardware distinctions between the early '90s chip-based sound systems of English and Japanese language regions.

In "Mitsume Meets Demoscene," an arrangement of Nintendo Famicom title Mitsume ga Tooru, a boss battle track undergoes a stylistic transformation. The electronic remix appears nearly identical to the Famicom source material before eerily metamorphosing into an arpeggiated Amiga demoscene jam.

In an interview with c64.com, 4mat described his experience entering into the demoscene. "When you're young, it's a good place for honing your creative skills. At the time, there weren't many outlets for expressing yourself on a computer cheaply. You could get your work out to many people for nothing, the good stuff was spread, and the bad stuff stalled. I got into games development through the scene as there were many more sceners working in games in the 90's."

4mat has had a hand in the sound design of popular horror titles Silent Hill Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, developed by Climax Studios in Portsmouth, Hampshire. More recently he independently designed the demo for his forthcoming vertical shooter Depth, which will make use of inexpensive red/cyan glasses to create 3D visuals.

In 2010 the musician posted an EP in an experimental new style called "This is marie2," described as 6 tracks, 13 minutes, no demoscene, no arpeggios." It was followed by an original album of music, entitled "Decades," his first full 4mat album. His writing on videogame music can be found at the weblog I Hear the Sound of Waves.

『Mitsume Meets Demoscene』

I Hear the Sound of Wavesにて見つける事が出来る。
